The chlorine ion in salt is the main material for production of hydrochloric acid which is an important component of gastric juice. Sodium ions along with ions of other elements are engaged in transmission of nerve impulses, contraction of muscle fibers, so their insufficient concentration in the body leads to constant weakness, increasing fatigue and other neuromuscular disorders.

Salt is an important spice for cooking. It has a characteristic taste that is well known to any person. Any dish has bland taste if there is no salt there.
